At the Rails online conference “Exploring Rails 3” (http://en.oreilly.com/railswinter10) early this morning Australian time, one of the most useful things for me was a coverage of Rack - what it is, and how its thinking & approach now permeate much of Rails 3 (currently in beta).

Handbrake - sweet video transcoding for *nix →
I’ve stuffed around with a lot of open source video encoders / transcoders over the past little while… and Handbrake looks like the goods.
From its meta description:
HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.
Gonna try it out this afternoon!
Ahhh… finally successful with bundler 0.9.6, rails 2.3.5 and a _real_ app (even on heroku)…

Roo - ruby meets spreadsheets →
I’ve worked with spreadsheets a fair bit - both into and out of Ruby and (cough!) PHP apps… and this looks like a seriously neat library for using Google, Excel (incl. .xlsx) and OpenOffice spreadsheets in Ruby.
