Alex Sexton brings together a stack of really useful resources and provides a great treatment of how to manage prototypal inheritance in Javascript + JQuery. A ripper of an article.

A practical guide to designing for the web [book] →
Typography, colour, layout… all things about which I know precious little… I’m about to head away on holidays, but am wishing I had this to take with me. It’ll have to wait until I return! UPDATE: Think I’m gonna grab the PDF book

Crafting Subtle & Realistic User Interfaces →
I’m far from being a capable UI crafter… so found this great treatment of 3D, texture, etc invaluable in helping to broaden my thinking. Thanks to http://twitter.com/dylanfm for the link!

Twitter's Ryan King on how they're starting to use... →
Having been playing with MongoDB (http://mongodb.org), I thought it was interesting to see the reasons Ryan’s going with Cassandra(http://incubator.apache.org/cassandra). In summary (quote): No single points of failure Highly scalable writes (we have highly variable write traffic) A healthy and productive open source community

Rack as Unix pipes? →
At the Rails online conference “Exploring Rails 3” (http://en.oreilly.com/railswinter10) early this morning Australian time, one of the most useful things for me was a coverage of Rack - what it is, and how its thinking & approach now permeate much of Rails 3 (currently in beta). Yehuda Katz (http://twitter.com/wycats) was manning the chat room, and posted this awesome compilation...

Lachlan Hardy (http://twitter.com/lachlanhardy) posted about Eric Ries (http://www.startuplessonslearned.com)… so I went hunting, and turned up this great video - Eric covering topics related to startups - the need to release early and often, ‘pivot’, and generally be pragmatic. Good stuff.

Handbrake - sweet video transcoding for *nix →
I’ve stuffed around with a lot of open source video encoders / transcoders over the past little while… and Handbrake looks like the goods. From its meta description: HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows. Gonna try it out this afternoon!

A quick who's who in Javascript →
Teylor Feliz (http://www.teylorfeliz.net) has compiled and posted this really great list of influential Javascript developers - complete with links to their blogs and/or twitter feeds. The list covers many of the usual suspects (John Resig, Douglas Crockford, as well as a number of lesser-known innovators). My tip, if you’re not following any of these guys, is to grab the twitter feed of...

Matz on how programming languages affect thought →
Yehuda (http://twitter.com/wycats) tweeted this link to Matz’s slides from OSCON 2003 - awesome insight into Matz’s thinking about the role of the language designer, and the philosophy behind Ruby (how naming - “While you program to solve your problem, I program your brain to work better”.

Uploadify - with Flex →
Plus2’s legendary Lachie Cox (http://smartbomb.com) has worked his magic on getting Uploadify’s Flash multi-file uploader working… using the free Flex Builder. From the GitHub readme: The flash/jQuery multiple file uploader at http://www.uploadify.com/ is quite nice, but has a few bugs and slow development progress. The flash part’s “source” is contained in a...

Roo - ruby meets spreadsheets →
I’ve worked with spreadsheets a fair bit - both into and out of Ruby and (cough!) PHP apps… and this looks like a seriously neat library for using Google, Excel (incl. .xlsx) and OpenOffice spreadsheets in Ruby. Props to Ryan Bates for the tweet: http://twitter.com/rbates/status/8969980156
